Singer/Songwriter/Guitarist Tom Butwin was raised on a healthy musical diet of George Harrison, Billy Joel, Michael Jackson, and musical theater that mirrors the wide spectrum of performances he has given over his relatively short 16 year career. Equally at home onstage in a Broadway-style musical, fronting an original pop/rock band that bears his name, or giving an intimate acoustic performance, he brings a unique and powerful voice to each setting.
As a four-time Detroit Music Award nominee, Tom Butwin is fresh off of a Spring 2017 run starring as "Jesus" in Andrew Lloyd Webber's hit musical, "Jesus Christ Superstar.” Since 2003, Tom has released four full-length albums, the most recent being 2016's collection of classic musical theater songs, A Different Stage. Also in 2016, Tom embarked on an ambitious project called #52Covers through which he released a new cover song each week to his YouTube Channel.
Tom has shared the stage with such notable artists as Ernie Halter, Steve Moakler, Seth Glier, and Emily Hearn. He has also played many notable venues such as NYC's Rockwood Music Hall, The Ark in Ann Arbor, MI, and Seven Steps Up in Spring Lake, MI while being prominently featured on WDET's Ann Delisi's Essential Music & Rob Reinhart's Essential Music, as well as on Ann Arbor's 107 One shows Tree Town Sound with Matthew Altruda, John Bommarito's Acoustic Brunch, and Martin Bandyke's morning show. Tom's television appearances include multiple performances on WJBK Fox 2 Detroit, WZZM 13 Grand Rapids, and a recent 2013 performance on WXYZ Detroit Channel 7.
With his full band and acoustic duo performances, Tom Butwin is quickly becoming a Michigan festival staple after performances at the 2008, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2016, & 2017 Ford Arts, Beats, & Eats festivals, 2013, 2014, 2015, & 2016 Ann Arbor Summer Festivals, 2013 Ann Arbor Art Fair, 2013 & 2014 Detroit River Days Festival, and his stand-out showing on the main stage and secondary stage at the 2009 Rothbury Music Festival alongside Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan, & the Grateful Dead.
This & Hereafter
2013's "This & Hereafter" was a product of a 14-day songwriting marathon that Tom embarked on during May of 2012. "I wrote and recorded a demo of a new song everyday, for 14 days straight, last Spring...and this album is what came of it," says Butwin of the creative exercise. Tom spent the remainder of 2012 polishing and recording the songs he wrote during those sessions for the album about to be released. "This & Hereafter" features some of Detroit's finest producers, engineers, and musicians and their work.
